If you love reading, chances are you enjoy a good word game. While I don\u2019t have scientific data to support this claim, there\u2019s definitely something about playing with language that feels especially satisfying to book lovers. Word games challenge our vocabularies, spark creativity and are just plain fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some of my favorite word games for readers, along with a little history and why they\u2019re worth adding to your next game night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wordle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year Launched:<\/strong> 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play:<\/strong> Guess a 5-letter word in six tries. Gray mean that letter isn\u2019t in the word, yellow means right letter wrong spot and green means right letter and placement. You can only play one new game a day (unless you go back into archived puzzles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Readers Love It: <\/strong>It\u2019s quick, clever and just the right amount of brain exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun Fact: <\/strong>My favorite cousin<\/a> introduced me to this game several years ago, and now I play it almost daily. As I was reading up on Wordle for this post, I wondered \u2013 how many 5-letter words exist? According to Rosetta Stone<\/a>, there are 2315 5-letter words \u2013 enough to last Wordle through the end of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scrabble<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First created:<\/strong> 1938 (called Lexiko, later Criss-Cross Words)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play: <\/strong>Form words with letter tiles to collect points. High-value letters and double\/triple words spaces keep things competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why It\u2019s Special to Me:<\/strong> Scrabble is more than just a game in my family; it\u2019s tied to countless family memories. It was my late-grandma\u2019s favorite game, and it was played at every family gathering I can remember. She didn\u2019t let us cheat \u2013 but every now and then a questionable word managed to slide by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boggle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released:<\/strong> 1972 (originally called Find-A-Word)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play: <\/strong>Shake the letter cube tray, set the timer and find as many words as possible (tiles must be touching). Letters can\u2019t be reused, words need to be at least three letters long and longer words earn more points. Once the timer runs out, everyone reviews their words with one another, and any duplicate words are scratched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it Works: <\/strong>Fast-paced, easy to learn and always competitive it the best way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scattergories<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Published: <\/strong>1988<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play:<\/strong> Roll a letter and try to fill out a list of categories using words that start with that letter. Duplicate words cancel out, and appropriate alliteration leads to more points, so originality matters!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reader-Friendly Appeal:<\/strong> This one taps into vocabulary and<\/em> creativity \u2013 which can be surprisingly challenging!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taboo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Published<\/strong>: 1989<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play:<\/strong> Give clues to help your team guess a word \u2013 without using the words listed as \u201ctaboo.\u201d If you slip, the other team hits the buzzer. Get as many words guessed before the timer runs out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why It\u2019s Fun: <\/strong>High energy + buzzer chaos = instant laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play: <\/strong>Get your team to guess the word on your card (or screen). Pass the disc quickly \u2013 if the timer runs out on your turn, the other team scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Book Lovers Enjoy It:<\/strong> It works your brain and your nerves \u2013 especially during the speed-pass moments!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crossword Puzzles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play: <\/strong>Use clues to fill in intersecting words vertically and horizontally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Play:<\/strong> Find hidden words in a grid. They may appear forward, backward, vertical or diagonal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teacher-Loved and Kid-Friendly:<\/strong> My boys still get these at school, and I find myself wanting to make a copy so I can play along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
