If you love books, there’s something especially satisfying about turning that love into something you can make. Book-inspired crafts are a fun way to celebrate reading- whether you’re creating something practical like bookmarks, decorating your home library, or crafting meaningful gifts for fellow readers.
Below are several book-themed craft ideas I’ve either tried myself or have made my must-make list. These ideas are beginner-friendly, reader-approved and perfect for a cozy crafting session. And maybe you could even plan one for your next book club meeting!

Diamond Painting Bookmarks
Diamond painting bookmarks are one of the easiest and most relaxing DIY bookmark ideas. Each kit includes everything you need, making this a stress-free craft evening for beginners. Simply choose a design you love and place the beads in their color-coded spots.
This craft pairs perfectly with listening to audiobook and makes a great bookish gift idea, especially since many sets come in multi-packs. It’s also very kid-friendly, making it a fun family activity.
Best for: easy book crafts, gifts for readers, crafts for kids
Here’s the peacock bookmark and boho set pictured below. This bookshelf set and floral set are next on my list.

Cross-Stitch Bookmarks
Cross-stitch has been gaining popularity, and cross-stitch bookmarks are a beautiful way to combine reading and creativity. While I’m not personally skilled in cross-stitch, I love how intricate and personal these bookmarks can be.
Find a pattern that fits your aesthetic – floral, literary quotes, or minimalist designs – and create a handmade bookmark any reader would treasure.
Best for: Handmade gifts for book lovers, aesthetic bookmarks
Book Spine Bricks
This is one craft that’s high on my to-try list. Book spine bricks are painted patio bricks designed to look like the spines of your favorite books. Paint the skinny side of the brick with the title and author, then seal it for outdoor use.
They’re perfect for decorating flower beds, patios or even the entrance to a home library. This would be especially charming outside a library or bookstore.
Best for: Book-themed outdoor décor, library-inspired crafts
Blanket Made from Favorite Book Covers
Around the holidays, I started seeing custom blankets made with favorite book covers – and I immediately loved this idea. A book cover blanket is a cozy way to celebrate the books you love most.
This makes a thoughtful keepsake for avid readers and a unique addition to any reading nook.
Best for: personalized book gifts, cozy reading décor
Painted Rocks Featuring Book Characters
This is one of my favorite book-inspired crafts. Using smooth river rocks and acrylic paint, you can recreate beloved book characters in miniature form. I’ve painted many of these for my boys over the years, featuring their favorite characters. Our paints are from Walmart, and I use this spray to seal the rocks.
We keep our favorites, but our community also has a “find a rock, hide a rock” group where we place painted rocks around town for others to find and enjoy.
Best for: family-friendly crafts, character art, community art projects

Anxiety Bookshelf Craft
This anxiety bookshelf is a miniature craft that requires patience and careful planning, but the result is stunning. Many people create these to represent the books they read in a year.
Supplies you’ll need:
- Mini bookcase (available at Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
- Book covers designed in Canva
- Foam block cut into book shapes
- Printed covers wrapped around foam cutouts
Arrange the mini books inside the bookcase to create a tiny, personalized bookshelf. You can view a tutorial here.
Best for: miniature book crafts, reading challenges, book tracking projects
Paint-a-Book Cover Class
Some local bookstores offer group painting classes where participants recreate a book cover on canvas. If you don’t have one nearby, this is also easy to do at home.
Choose a book cover, gather supplies, and spend an evening painting while chatting with fellow book lovers. Once finished, hang your artwork in your library or reading space.
Best for: Book club activities, creative reader events, bookish wall art
Final Thoughts
Book-inspired crafts are a creative extension of reading—they let you engage with stories beyond the page. Whether you’re crafting solo, with kids, or with fellow readers, these DIY book crafts are a meaningful way to celebrate your love of books.
If you try any of these ideas, I’d love to hear which one you enjoyed most! Or, share a picture of your bookish craft in the comments.
