Let me say this up front – I am not a techie person. Back in college, I remember seeing a chart (see below) that showed people and where they fall into categories related to adapting to technology. I fall into the Late Majority or Laggards categories.
Despite all the advancements with e-books, Kindles, Nooks, and iPads, I will always prefer a physical book.

Why I Prefer Physical Books Over E-Books
- Tactile experience: I like the feeling of the book in my hands. Turning real pages, seeing the progress as I move through chapters – it makes reading more engaging.
- No charging required: Unlike e-readers, physical books never need batteries or cords.
- Screen-free time: Reading a paper book gives me a true break from devices and notifications.
- Tradition: Holding a physical book connects me to a simple pleasure people have enjoyed for centuries.
Some readers even love the smell of books or bookstores (that’s not me, but I get the appeal!).
When E-Books Win
My one exception where e-books win over hard copies – moving. Packing up boxes of books is time-consuming and heavy. An e-reader can hold thousands of titles in one lightweight device—definitely easier on moving day!
The Great Debate: Physical Books vs. E-Books
The truth is, both formats have pros and cons. Some readers love the portability and accessibility of e-readers, while others, like me, are loyal to physical books.
What about you? Do you prefer the feel of a paperback in your hands or the convenience of an e-reader?
