If you’re looking for a creative way to encourage reading and spread kindness, a book hiding activity for kids is a perfect choice. This “hide a book, find a book” idea turns reading into an adventure while giving children a chance to share stories with others. My kids used to love hiding books for strangers to find, and now they’re more interested in selling their outgrown books—but this project remains one of our favorite memories.

What You’ll Need for a Book Hiding Activity

  • Books. Every so often, I go through my sons’ bookcases with them, and we create a stack of books they no longer read or are interested in.
  • Storage Bags (gallon size)
  • A short note explaining that the book is free to take and enjoy (download my free printable book hiding note here)

Once you have everything together, slip the book and note into a Ziploc bag. Here’s how mine looked all put together.

Then when you are taking a walk or visiting a playground, park or other populated location, leave it in a noticeable place for someone to find.

I love this idea because of the sense of adventure, the encouragement for kids to read and the generosity aspect of it, all tied into one fun idea. I hope you and your kids have fun trying this out.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re hiding a book or finding one, this is a wonderful way to connect with your community and encourage a lifelong love of reading. It’s low-cost, easy to do, and full of smiles for both the giver and the receiver.

Welcome to my book nook! I’m glad you’re here!

I’m married to Matt, and we have two sons that keep us laughing and on our toes. To paraphrase Buddy the Elf, “I love reading. Reading’s my favorite.” This website exists for all things books and reading. I hope you’ll turn the page with me and take a look around.
